Robot density and digital adoption by country (2026)

The short answer: the world average is 132 robots per 10,000 manufacturing employees (IFR, 2024, new methodology). South Korea leads at 1,220; among the countries below, 20 are above the world average and 2 are below it. Robot density tells you how much of the line is machine; the AI-adoption column tells you how much of it is measured.

How automated is manufacturing in each country, and how fast is the digital layer following? IFR robot density, the share of manufacturers using AI or other digital technologies, and the manufacturing base those numbers sit on.

Robot density, AI adoption and manufacturing base

Robot density: IFR World Robotics 2025 (2024 installations, revised methodology; not comparable with pre-2024 releases). AI adoption: share of manufacturing enterprises using at least one AI technology (Eurostat 2024 for EU countries; national surveys elsewhere, labelled). Manufacturing share and employment from Eurostat, the World Bank and national statistics offices.

IFR revised its density methodology with World Robotics 2025: 2024 figures (world 132, CN 166, US 307) are NOT comparable with the previous-method 2023 release (world 162, CN 470, US 295). Use only the 2024 series on the sites. Belgium is reported jointly as 'Belgium & Luxembourg'. WR 2026 (Sept 2026) covers 2025 installations; its density press release was not published as of 2026-10-10.

Reading the two columns together

A high robot density with low digital adoption is the common pattern: lines are automated but still run on paper logs and manual OEE. Countries where both columns are high (Korea, Germany, the Nordics) set the productivity benchmark; countries with cheap labour and low density keep downtime cost low per hour but lose more hours. Use the country benchmark pages to see the sector mix behind each figure.

Frequently asked questions

Why are the 2024 robot-density figures lower than earlier years?

IFR revised its methodology with World Robotics 2025: the 2024 densities (world 132, China 166, United States 307) are not comparable with the 2023 release (world 162, China 470, United States 295). We publish only the 2024 series.

What counts as "using AI"?

For EU countries, Eurostat's ICT survey: enterprises with 10 or more employees using at least one AI technology (text mining, speech recognition, image recognition, machine learning, process automation or autonomous movement). Other countries use their national survey definition, stated in the source column.

Does higher robot density mean higher OEE?

Not by itself. Automation removes some losses (speed, manual quality) and introduces others (changeover, minor stops, maintenance). The sector OEE ranges on the country pages are the better reference.
